BLVD is proud to present “Fanatic” a group show that explores the enthusiasm expressed in “Fan” art. The artists participating in this show were given the task of creating art that is in tribute to something that they are truly a fan of.(more…)
I hadn’t been out in awhile and when I saw this great art on the flyer for this show I made sure to remind myself to be there. I couldn’t find anything out on Steven Mathews online, which was explained to me by Breeze Block owner Paige Pendergast that he keeps a low profile and likes being hard to find. With his work showing all month I’ll be really surprised if there is anything left. Check out his interview with Paige to get a better insight to this local artist. (more…)
Steve Mathews has new work going up at The Breeze Block Gallery. All month his work will be available. Check out his interview with Paige to get a better insight to this local artist.
Coming across this giant sculpture on the Eastbank, I had to find out more about this mystery “Totem”. On the back of the totem was Chris Haberman’s name. So I found him online and found what this was all about.
So is this the first “totem” you’ve done?
It is the first totem i’ve made, but a good direction for me…since I use garbage and scrap material - so its almost like trying to build a structure out of paintings. (more…)

Last Saturday was the Alberta Street Fair on (you guessed it..) Alberta Street. Now, usually I attend the same celebration under a different name- Last Thursday. And I have to admit, I like the night life version better. More going on-more freaks and potential trouble. As one old timer told me, the Last Thursday celebrations remind him of the Haight-Ashbury district circa ‘61. I really don’t fucking know, as I wasn’t born for almost 15 years after. I do like the potential truth to that though. (more…)
This is a genius movie. Get a hold of this movie when you can after September 29th. Starring Danny McBride from Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder. Jujitsu sucks!
H Chris Crites paintings are unique and recognizable. Having this great talent right here in Cascadia should make us proud. For those of you who made it to his Roq La Rue show saw his trademark vivid color palette on paperbag applied to machine guns, pistols and shotguns. Now those of us in Portland will get a chance to see Chris in person with new work. The Life gallery is featuring his work in October. (more…)
Some of the best galleries in Seattle reside on a strip on 2nd avenue in Belltown. On this Second Friday, the afternoon was perfect, maybe it was the Dali Lama’s visit? The day was beautiful with green finally showing up on trees and paintings showing up on gallery walls. (more…)
April 4th from 6:30 to 8:30 is the opening reception for his new work at Tiny’s, 1412 SE 12th Ave. Showing all month at Tiny’s on Hawthorne is a series of vinyl cutouts. Jonathon explained that he takes his illustrations into a plotter type device which slices the vinyl. He then stretches it over wood. (more…)
You know. Portland Oregon. Home sweet home of the Breeze Block Gallery. Tucked away off Alberta Street murals cover the front and inside of the shop and a ‘whatever goes’ wall on the side of the building. In love with the new location, Paige Pendergast started the gallery as Street Level perched in an alley off Mississippi. From there she and friends decided that the alley wasn’t the best for visibility and looked to move. After a solid search the treasure was found. Two garage doors front and back, a private back patio and parking. And conveniently next door is the Bye & Bye, a bar that is busy every night. Dreamy. (more…)
I love living in the Northwest. More specifically, I love Portland. It is not the same as any other place in the world. No one from the city would tell you otherwise. Much of that pride probably coincides with the young and diverse community dwelling within the confines of our small city. Out of towners call Portland, a place for young creatives to swell and unleash their frivolous spending habits upon the world. And while quite frankly, some of that may hold true. In reality, it isn’t really like that. At least, I don’t like to think of it like that. I like to think of Portland as a place screaming with new and young artists willing to explore new and exciting forms of media. I recently had a chance to talk to Justin Gorman from Build Productions, and if you haven’t had a chance to check Build productions out, hop on your iphone and check out his blog. You won’t be disappointed. (more…)
I stumbled upon this cool photo illustration site with great images of Vancouver and British Columbia. Check them out here. He makes the claim that Vancouver is the grayest city he has ever been to. (more…)
Being an artist in Portland, an artist period is a broad term. People have a lot to say it seems and through Art, expression becomes boundless, possibilities endless and the outcomes unpredictable to say the least. Many make grand things through their minds and capability to create. But, does sticking feathers up your butt makes you a chicken? (more…)
The Hecklewoods have brought Matt Cipov’s art work to Portland. This introduction was formalized on Saturday night’s opening of his latest work. Music was held down by Hostile Tapeover whose entire set is done with only cassettes and almost all singles. (more…)
The last time I went down to the lovely Alberta neighborhood, some guy called me and my friends ‘socs’ and tried to rumble with us, Outsiders-style. Apparently anyone that wears a shirt with a collar is a ‘soc,’ which is news to me. I don’t know if that’s normal for that part of town or what, but as it is I generally stay in good old South Brooklyn and leave the Northern reaches to the beard-bike-and-bead types. (more…)
I like art. I like to look at art, and I like to do art. But that doesn’t mean I also don’t hate art. The art people like to do around here is never the kind that I want to see happening. If I have to see one more shitty First Thursday painting of a unicorn, rainbow, or any other happy hipster bullshit, I swear I’ll never go north of Powell again. (more…)

By the time last Saturday arrived and I was finally able to make it down to the second night of the Portland Underground Film Festival, I had already heard a lot of stories about the previous night’s proceedings, namely the Bike Porn showing. Over beers at the Clinton Street I was told of bikes with bizarre, seat-replacing attachments designed to meet sexual ends, something that I could easily do without. But drunken shit-talk was not the order of the day, so I made my way to the theater to do some work and see what this festival was really all about. (more…)
