Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Portland /// Daniel Gill

Later this week Talkdemonic will release its first video from Eyes at Half Mast, the Orie Weeks-directed “Duality of Deathening.”  The band is also wrapping up its Fall tour this week on the West Coast. The video follows a jovial robot who tries to learn about being human through a book called Understanding Man.  He gets a quick lesson in biology, chemistry and in Heaven vs. Hell.  Orie Weeks also directed the much-beloved video for Blitzen Trapper’s “Wild Mountain Nation.” (more…)

Eternal Tapestry, Stunedelic Rock

Portland /// Jamie O’Cain

Never seeing the people who make music that I like is strange and makes it seem sometimes a bit less valuable. So when it came time to check out Eternal Tapestry I wanted to at least see who was behind this psych-rock extravaganza in my own city. Since I didn’t know who they were, I didn’t know if they were the group playing. (more…)

Ralph Kramden—————————————

Alright, this is bed time music. Not only slow but tired. There’s no party that this would turn out. This is for the merlot sipping hip hop crowd. The music is too smooth to be dangerous and too predictable to be challenging. Horns and string samples used the same way I’ve heard for 10 years. The back up vocals and aw shucks drum sound are older than McCain. (more…)

More Bounce To The Ounce

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Portland /// Cecil Brown

Damn! I can’t remember the last time I was afraid for my life at a show, but last night I was. Breakfast Mountain and Mad Rad were playing at the Hush (the place above the tube) and I’d spent the last week listening to Mad Rad getting hyped and excited. Breakfast Mountain was a bassy collective of jams and beats that felt like a ceremony. Ty, one of the founders of Boy Guerilla Records was one of the members and took his tamborining so serious he actually broke it two! I don’t even want to know what he’d do to a kazoo. (more…)

Portland /// Swan Lewis

Remember when jazz used to be fun? I don’t. Well, I have heard some good jazz here in Portland and also live in other cities- but the point is, maybe I am too young to have heard really good jazz out? Or maybe I just have not been to the right places lately. (more…)

Chicharones - Dynamic Duo

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Portland /// Wolf McGriddle

Berbati’s on saturday night Josh Martinez’s put on a show full of energy and excitement featuring his latest musical direction, World Famous Sex Buffet. Along with Sleep these two leap and shouted and sang their faces off. Putting entertainment above everything Josh kept everyone involved from balancing a beer on his head to high fives to “eye of the tiger”. (more…)

Mad Rad

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

Yo, these three dudes are banging shit from here to next year. Mad Rad, three completely entertaining diabolical guys rap’n to grindalicious beats and synth sounds. Imagine a super group sounding like Subtle, Chromeo and Justin Timberlake. For instance they bought a bunch of 3 D glasses online, and had a MAD RAD IN 3D show were they handed out the glasses to everyone. Then came out in giant heads (above). (more…)

The Caldonia’s, 40 Hundred Thousand Locked Up Guns, Guidance Counselor, Grab The Bat Killer

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

3 by you.

Olympia /// Jane Goodall

I was invited last minute by Guidance Counselor to ride up and catch his show in Olympia. I agreed only with the strict condition of no making out. My last experience was one I will always remember, but my heart is fragile and GC (He lets me call him that) is too much man for one woman. He made no promises but would reign in his seductive ways. (more…)

Guidance Counselor

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Bill Crowley /// Portland

Armed with dream catchers, a microphone, keyboard and (if you’re lucky) a guitar, Guidance Counselor is a convulsing dancing shaman. Never boring or running out of ideas Guidance Counselor is first a performer, second a musician. In this time of laptops and ipod dj’s, witnessing a Guidance Counselor show let’s the performance become exciting through the spontaneity missing with perfect beats and seamless mixes. In endless bouts of new projects he is conceiving new ways to communicate and express himself. (more…)

Kim Delacy’s Crescendos & Cadences

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Portland /// Cecil Brown

Kim DeLacy - Crescendos & Cadences

Imagine you found some dusty and forgotten records in an attic. Then took them home and found out they were soulful folk contemplations.  Taking a chance on an obscure little known record and finding a gem. A gem that somehow affected your perspective of the world.  That is Cresendos & Cadences. Kim DeLacy’s songs are your songs sung through a tough and gentle woman. Her voice is an instrument sewn into the songs in way that seems as if it’s the music singing and not Ms. DeLacy, evident from the first song Aching Bones. (more…)

Various Blows Fuses And Maybe Eardrums

Monday, June 9th, 2008

The monthly Various is coming together as one of the best nights in Portland. No longer the sausage fest it was in the beginning, girls are in force. So are the occasional ex-raver with glow lights on strings. With sonic bombardment, my notes actually say “bass of massive proportions”, it leaves you disoriented and slightly drugged. They not only blowing minds but fuses! The legendary HAS system sucked so much electricity it shut Branx down for about 5 minutes with complete silence and darkness! (more…)

Scream Club Finishes Tour @ Rotture

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Cindy Wonderful and Sarah Adorable finished their 3 month cross country tour Saturday at Rotture. In full effect and full of energy they went through their line up. It had been about a year since I last saw them and they were much more polished. Adding weird white masks as part of the performance. Performance and spectacle = entertaining. (more…)

I never thought hip hop could be pretty and sweet (Kanye West, Color Me Badd and Usher excluded) yet here comes something I’ve never heard. Not a new genre of music, but a new attitude. Simple and real rhyming about cute boys and crushes. (more…)
